Glutathione for melasma: does it help, and what actually works?
How to tell melasma from tan, what glutathione can and cannot do for it, and the routine dermatologists build around sun protection.
- Melasma is patchy, hormone- and light-driven pigmentation that needs a dermatologist.
- Glutathione is not proven to treat melasma; at most it supports a gentle routine.
- A tinted sunscreen that blocks visible light helped melasma more than UV-only sunscreen in a trial.
Does glutathione help melasma?
Not reliably. The Indian dermatology review found the evidence too weak to call glutathione a melasma treatment. A glutathione cream can be part of a gentle routine, but daily sunscreen and a dermatologist's plan do most of the work.
What is the best treatment for melasma?
Strict daily sun protection, ideally a tinted sunscreen that also blocks visible light, plus treatment chosen by a dermatologist. Melasma can be controlled but often returns, so long-term care matters.
Is it melasma or tan?
| Tan | Melasma | Sun spots | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Looks like | Even darkening of sun-exposed skin | Patchy brown or grey-brown areas, often on both cheeks, forehead, nose bridge or upper lip | Small, flat, round brown spots |
| Main triggers | Sun | Sun and visible light, hormones (pregnancy, pills), genetics, heat | Years of sun |
| Fades on its own? | Yes, over weeks with sun protection | Rarely; tends to return | Slowly, if at all |
| Who to see | Skincare and sunscreen are enough | A dermatologist | A dermatologist if a spot changes |
Why sunscreen matters even more for melasma
Melasma is darkened not only by UV rays but also by visible light, which ordinary sunscreens do not block well. In a randomised trial, people with melasma who used a sunscreen that also blocked visible light (with iron oxides, which give tinted sunscreens their colour) improved more than those using UV-only sunscreen (Castanedo-Cázares et al., 2014).
- Use a tinted, broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every morning, indoors too if you sit near windows.
- Reapply every 2–3 hours outdoors; add a hat and shade.
- Heat can also worsen melasma: avoid steam rooms and very hot kitchens where you can.
What a dermatologist may suggest
Treatment depends on your skin and is a medical decision. Options doctors use include prescription creams (sometimes a short course of a combination cream), azelaic acid, tranexamic acid and gentle peels. Do not use steroid-containing "fairness" creams on your own: misuse of steroid creams on the face is a common cause of thin, red, damaged skin in India (Sonthalia, Daulatabad & Sarkar, IJDVL 2016).
Where glutathione fits
Glutathione slows tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin, so it is often tried for pigmentation. But the studies are small and short (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025), and the Indian dermatology review says the evidence is not strong enough to call glutathione a melasma treatment (Sonthalia, Daulatabad & Sarkar, IJDVL 2016). If your dermatologist agrees, a glutathione and niacinamide cream such as GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream can sit in a gentle night routine. It contains retinol and salicylic acid, so ask before combining it with prescription creams.
Melasma in pregnancy
Melasma often starts or worsens in pregnancy. Use sunscreen and gentle basics only, and skip retinol creams. Many cases fade after delivery. Read glutathione in pregnancy.
