Glutathione guide

Glutathione vs azelaic acid: which suits acne-prone and uneven skin?

How azelaic acid and glutathione compare for acne-prone skin and uneven tone, and how to fit both into one routine.

Is azelaic acid better than glutathione for acne marks?

For skin that still gets pimples, azelaic acid has the edge because it also calms breakouts and redness, not just marks. Glutathione is a gentle option for leftover dark marks, dullness and tan. Many people do well with azelaic acid for active acne and a glutathione cream for overall tone.

Can I use azelaic acid and glutathione together?

Yes. They work in different ways and can share a routine. Keep it simple: azelaic acid in the morning under sunscreen, or on alternate nights, and a glutathione cream on the other nights. Introduce one product at a time and patch test, especially if your skin is sensitive.

Is azelaic acid a prescription medicine in India?

Lower-strength azelaic acid appears in some cosmetic serums, while higher strengths are sold as prescription medicines in India and many other countries. If you have moderate acne, rosacea or melasma, ask a dermatologist which strength suits you rather than choosing the strongest tube at the chemist.

GlutaNex does not contain azelaic acid. Our GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream combines glutathione with niacinamide, vitamin C, retinol and salicylic acid, among others. This page is general ingredient education.

Azelaic acid does several jobs at once. It reduces the bacteria linked to pimples, calms the redness around them, helps keep pores from clogging, and slows tyrosinase so the brown marks pimples leave behind fade faster. That combination is why dermatologists often use it for acne, for rosacea-type redness and for pigment that follows breakouts. It is also usually gentler than many stronger acne medicines, though it can tingle or itch for the first couple of weeks.

Glutathione is not an acne ingredient. Its role is overall brightness and evenness, with antioxidant support against sun and pollution (Sonthalia, Daulatabad & Sarkar, IJDVL 2016). Research on topical glutathione is still small and short (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025), so think of it as a gentle helper, not a fix for breakouts.

How to layer them

The main risk is doing too much at once. Azelaic acid, retinol and salicylic acid can each cause dryness, and stacking them on the same night is the usual reason for red, peeling skin.

  1. Weeks 1–2: start only one new product. If it is azelaic acid, use it every other day.
  2. Weeks 3–4: add the second. A practical split is azelaic acid in the morning, under moisturiser and sunscreen, and a glutathione night cream in the evening.
  3. If your night cream has retinol and salicylic acid (like the GlutaNex Night Cream), use it 2–3 nights a week at first, and do not apply azelaic acid on those same nights until your skin is comfortable.
  4. Every morning: broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. Without it, marks keep coming back.

Cleanse with something gentle, such as Gluta Boost Face Wash, and skip harsh scrubs while using any acid. Step-by-step night routine: how to use glutathione cream.

Choosing an azelaic acid product

  • For mild marks and occasional pimples, a cosmetic serum or cream with azelaic acid is a reasonable start. Read the full ingredient list, and avoid products with heavy fragrance if your skin is sensitive.
  • For regular breakouts, rosacea or melasma, see a dermatologist. Higher-strength azelaic acid is a prescription product in India, and a doctor may combine it with other medicines you should not mix on your own.
  • Avoid unlabelled "acne and pigment" creams sold loose or without a full ingredient list. Some contain steroids, which can cause more acne, thin skin and redness when used on the face.

Mon, Wed, FriFace wash, azelaic acid, moisturiser, sunscreenFace wash, glutathione night cream
Tue, Thu, SatFace wash, moisturiser, sunscreenFace wash, plain moisturiser
SunFace wash, moisturiser, sunscreenRest night: moisturiser only

After four comfortable weeks, many people use azelaic acid every morning and the night cream on more nights. If your skin gets dry or red, step back to the schedule above.

Normal tingling or a reaction?

  • Usually normal: mild tingling or itch for a few minutes after applying, during the first weeks.
  • Stop and rest your skin: burning that lasts, swelling, peeling patches or rash. Go back to a plain moisturiser and sunscreen, and restart more slowly, or not at all.
  • See a doctor: swelling of the eyes or lips, or a rash spreading beyond where you applied the product.

Realistic expectations

Post-acne marks usually take 8 to 12 weeks to look clearly lighter, and older marks may only fade partly. Neither azelaic acid nor glutathione changes your natural skin colour. Picking or squeezing pimples makes marks darker and longer-lasting, whatever you apply.
