Glutathione for dark circles: does it work?
The different causes of dark circles, which type glutathione might help, and how to care for the eye area safely.
- Glutathione may help only the brownish, pigment type of dark circles, and only a little.
- Thin skin, vessels, hollows and puffiness need other care.
- Keep retinol and acid creams away from the eye area.
Does glutathione help dark circles?
Only a little, and only for the brownish, pigment type. Many dark circles come from thin skin showing blood vessels, hollows, puffiness or genetics, which glutathione cannot change. Never apply retinol or acid creams close to the eyes.
Can I put glutathione night cream under my eyes?
Not one with retinol or salicylic acid, such as the GlutaNex Night Cream. Keep it at least a finger-width away from the eyes and use a gentle, fragrance-free eye cream instead.
Four common causes
| Type | What it looks like | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Pigment | Brownish, common in Indian skin | Sunscreen, sunglasses, gentle brightening care |
| Vascular | Bluish or purple, worse when tired | Sleep, cool compress, treating allergies |
| Hollows | Shadow under the eye | Mostly structural; a dermatologist can advise |
| Puffiness | Bags, worse in the morning | Less salt at night, sleep, treating allergies |
Where glutathione fits
Glutathione is studied for overall skin tone, not specifically for dark circles (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025). For the pigment type, sun protection does most of the work.
Habits that help
- 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
- Do not rub your eyes; treat itchy allergies.
- Sunscreen around the eyes (mineral formulas sting less) and sunglasses.
- A gentle, fragrance-free eye cream at night.
When to see a doctor
Sudden dark circles, one-sided swelling, or circles with tiredness and weight change are worth a check-up.
