How long does glutathione cream take to work? A week-by-week timeline
What to expect in week 1, month 1 and month 3 of using a glutathione cream, and the common reasons people see no change.
- Smoother skin in 2–4 weeks, fresher look in 4–8 weeks, lighter tan and marks in 8–12 weeks.
- Studies on glutathione ran for 4 to 12 weeks, with modest effects.
- No daily sunscreen is the most common reason for no results.
How long does glutathione cream take to show results?
Expect skin to feel smoother within 2 to 4 weeks, a fresher look in 4 to 8 weeks, and lighter-looking tan or marks in 8 to 12 weeks of nightly use with daily sunscreen. Studies on glutathione ran for 4 to 12 weeks.
Can glutathione show results in 7 days?
No honest product can promise visible lightening in 7 days. Skin renews over about a month, and pigment fades slowly. A cream that changes colour in days may contain steroids or bleach.
Week-by-week timeline
| When | What you may notice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Skin adjusting. With retinol creams, mild tingling or dryness is common. | Use 2–3 nights a week. Sunscreen every morning. |
| Weeks 3–4 | Smoother, more hydrated feel. | Every other night if comfortable. |
| Weeks 4–8 | A fresher, less dull look. | Nightly if your skin is happy. |
| Weeks 8–12 | Tan and acne marks look lighter and more even. | Keep going; compare photos. |
| After 12 weeks | Gains hold only with sun protection. | Continue the routine to maintain. |
What the studies found
- Topical: a 2% glutathione lotion showed a lower melanin index after 10 weeks (Watanabe et al., 2014).
- Tablets: changes after 4 weeks at 500 mg a day (Arjinpathana & Asawanonda, 2012), and smaller, mostly non-significant changes over 12 weeks at 250 mg a day (Weschawalit et al., 2017).
- A 2025 review: effects are modest and studies are short (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025).
Why some people see no results
- No daily sunscreen, so new tan keeps replacing what fades.
- Using it now and then instead of most nights.
- Melasma, which needs a dermatologist (see glutathione for melasma).
- Expecting a colour change: glutathione does not change natural skin colour.
- Irritation from too much product or too many actives, which can leave new marks.
Track progress honestly
Take a photo on day 1 in the same spot, same daylight, no filter, then once every 2 weeks. Compare week 1 with week 8, not day to day. If you bought GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream, the free routine tracker counts your nights for you.
