Glutathione cream with multani mitti: can you use both, and in what order?
Can you use a multani mitti face pack with glutathione cream? What the clay does, which nights to use each, what not to mix in, and a weekly plan for Indian skin.
Can I use glutathione cream after a multani mitti face pack?
Yes, but not always on the same night. Multani mitti soaks up oil and can leave skin dry and a little tight. If your glutathione cream has retinol or salicylic acid, use the pack on a rest night and apply a plain moisturiser after it, then use the cream the next night.
Can I mix glutathione cream into a multani mitti face pack?
No. Mixing a cream into clay wastes it, changes how it spreads and makes the amount on your skin unpredictable. Keep them separate: the pack is washed off after a few minutes, the cream is a thin leave-on layer used at night.
Does multani mitti with glutathione make skin fair?
No. Neither the clay nor glutathione changes the skin colour you were born with. Multani mitti can make oily skin feel cleaner and look less shiny for a while, and a glutathione cream used with daily sunscreen can help tan and dark marks look lighter slowly, over 8 to 12 weeks.
You can use a multani mitti face pack and a glutathione cream in the same week, but they work best on different nights. Multani mitti (fuller's earth clay) soaks up oil and leaves skin feeling clean, while a glutathione cream is a leave-on product used for a brighter, more even-looking tone over weeks.
The clay can leave skin dry and a little sensitive for a few hours, so the right plan depends on your skin type and on what else is in your cream. This guide gives a simple weekly schedule for Indian weather, what to mix into the pack and what never to add.
Multani mitti vs glutathione cream at a glance
| Multani mitti pack | Glutathione cream | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A natural clay, mixed with water or rose water and washed off | A leave-on cream with glutathione and usually other actives |
| Main cosmetic job | Absorbs oil, leaves skin feeling clean and less shiny for a while | Brighter, more even-looking tone over weeks |
| How often | Once a week, at most twice for very oily skin | A thin layer at night, as often as the label and your skin allow |
| Main downside | Can dry and tighten skin, especially in winter | Works slowly; needs sunscreen every morning |
What multani mitti actually does
Multani mitti is one of the most used home face packs in India. It is a clay that pulls oil and dirt from the surface of the skin, which is why oily and combination skin often looks fresher and less greasy after it, especially in humid months.
Keep expectations honest. A clay pack does not remove tan, pigmentation or acne marks, and it does not change skin colour. Any "glow" after washing it off is mostly clean, slightly cooled skin. That is still nice, but it is short-lived.
Why not use both on the same night every time
Clay takes oil away, and for a few hours skin can feel tight. If you then apply a cream with strong actives, it may sting more than usual. GlutaNex Glutathione Night Cream, for example, contains retinol and salicylic acid along with glutathione, niacinamide, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, peptides, aloe vera, turmeric and neem. That is why it is a night-only cream, started 2 to 3 nights a week. Pairing it with a drying pack on the same night is the most common way people end up with a burning, flaky face. Read glutathione cream burning if that has happened to you.
A glutathione cream without retinol or acids is gentler, and many people can use it after a pack. Still, start with separate nights and only combine them once you know your skin is fine.
A simple weekly plan
| Day | Oily or combination skin | Normal or dry skin |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Glutathione cream at night | Glutathione cream at night |
| Tuesday | Plain moisturiser | Plain moisturiser |
| Wednesday | Glutathione cream at night | Plain moisturiser |
| Thursday | Plain moisturiser | Glutathione cream at night |
| Saturday | Multani mitti pack (T-zone or whole face), then plain moisturiser | Pack only on the T-zone, or skip it; then a richer moisturiser |
| Every morning | Gentle wash and sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher | |
Once skin is used to the cream, you can add more cream nights, but keep the night of the pack and the night after it free of retinol and acids. For the full routine, see how to use glutathione cream.
How to use a multani mitti pack safely
- Mix a thin paste with plain water or rose water. Curd or a little aloe gel makes it less drying for normal skin.
- Apply a thin layer on clean skin, avoiding the eyes and lips. On combination skin, keep it to the forehead, nose and chin.
- Wash off before it cracks. About 8 to 10 minutes is enough. Letting it dry fully for half an hour pulls too much water from the skin.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a plain moisturiser straight away.
- Use the glutathione cream the next night, or the same night only if your cream has no retinol or acids and your skin does not feel tight.
What not to add to the pack
- Lemon juice: very acidic, can sting and leave patches darker after sun exposure.
- Baking soda or toothpaste: far too harsh for the face.
- Your glutathione cream or any serum: mixing wastes the product and you cannot control the amount.
- Bleach or "instant whitening" powders: these are not cosmetic glow products and can irritate badly.
Turmeric (haldi) is a common addition; a pinch is fine for most people but can stain. Read glutathione and turmeric and glutathione and neem for those pairings.
Adjusting through the Indian year
| Season | What to do |
|---|---|
| Summer and monsoon | The pack once or twice a week suits oily skin; keep the cream layer thin. See glutathione for oily skin. |
| Winter and AC rooms | Cut the pack to once every two weeks or T-zone only; use a richer moisturiser. See glutathione cream for dry skin. |
| After a beach trip or sunburn | Skip both the pack and active creams until skin is calm. |
A more even-looking tone takes 8 to 12 weeks of steady use with sunscreen, and the clay does not speed that up. A 2025 review called topical glutathione promising but noted the studies are small and short (Khanna et al., J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2025). Read how long glutathione takes to work.
Who should be careful
- Dry or sensitive skin: clay can make tightness and flaking worse. Patch test both products on the jawline first. See glutathione cream for sensitive skin.
- Active acne that is painful or widespread: a face pack is not a treatment; see a dermatologist.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: a cream with retinol is not for this time unless your doctor says it is fine.
